Tesla Wi-Fi: Overview
When you purchase a Tesla, you will automatically access standard Wi-Fi connectivity in your vehicle for the next eight years at no additional cost.
The connection period begins on the first day you receive your new Tesla from your auto dealer.
In case you’re planning to buy a used vehicle, you will receive a notification explaining the remaining duration of your Standard Connectivity access.
The Standard Connectivity option provides access to limited services, such as navigation, basic maps, and OTA software updates.
If you want to access other features that require data usage, you must upgrade to Premium Connectivity
How to Connect to Tesla Wi-Fi
Tesla cars have built-in Wi-Fi adapters and cellular modems that allow you to access the internet in your EV.
These receivers connect to partnering public Wi-Fi hotspots (such as AT&T LTE) whenever you are within range to ensure uninterrupted internet connectivity.
You can also connect your Tesla EV to your home Wi-Fi or use your smartphone or tablet as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The best part is that the connection process is fast and easy. Here are the steps:
- Start your Tesla EV
- Go to the Control Screen and tap the Wi-Fi (wireless) icon
- Your Telsa EV will scan for available wireless networks nearby
- Select the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to
- Enter a Wi-Fi password when prompted
- Wait for your Tesla EV to connect to the wireless network
Tip – If a known Wi-Fi network does not appear in the search results, move your Tesla EV to a better position closer to the internet access point.
How to Fix Tesla Wi-Fi Connection Issues
For some reason, your EV might not connect to Wi-Fi, leaving you frustrated without internet access.
Fortunately, we are here to help. Below are a few tips to help you fix the problem.
1. Check Your Location/Eligibility
Unfortunately, the Premium Connectivity subscription is only available in selected North American, European, and Asia Pacific countries.
This means you can only qualify for the Standard Connectivity option if you are outside these locations.
2. Restart Your Tesla EV
Your Tesla might lose its internet connection because of a system fault or misconfigured settings.
Restarting your Tesla EV might help fix this problem. You only need to switch your car OFF and ON again and wait for the Wi-Fi settings to boot.
If restarting your vehicle doesn’t help, reboot your Wi-Fi settings by following these steps:
- Simultaneously press the scroll wheels on the control screen for 15 seconds
- Wait for the main display to go blank before releasing the buttons
- Wait for 60 seconds to 2 minutes for Wi-Fi settings to reboot and load
- Check if this resolves the issue
3. Restart Your Wi-Fi Router
Your Wi-Fi router or mobile hotspot might develop bugs and glitches caused by electrostatic charge.
Rebooting your router will help refresh the system, eliminate software bugs and restore your Wi-Fi network.
4. Reposition your Tesla EV
If you’ve connected your Tesla EV to your home router, you might experience connectivity issues because of weak signals.
Moving your Tesla EV closer to the access point can help resolve the issue.
Note: You can install a Wi-Fi booster or range extender in your garage to eliminate dead zones and enhance coverage throughout your home.
5. Check your Tesla Wi-Fi Subscription
Tesla Wi-Fi is available on all Tesla EVs for free. However, you must pay a monthly subscription to enjoy high-speed wireless internet and the associated data-usage features offered by the Premium Wi-Fi Connectivity plan.
So, if your subscription is inactive (expired) your car won’t connect to Wi-Fi.
