8 Famous Green Buildings that are inspiring

Last year I traveled to see how Architects and Engineers have incorporated nature, renewable technology, and climate change solutions into green buildings.

On the trip, I see the carbon-neutral and eco-friendly design which is helping fight global warming for our future. From nature-inspired skyscraper constructions to buildings that produce green energy.

The film features seven countries that are developing green architecture which is helping clean our air, cool our cities, and lower our energy use.

How Can We Encourage Green Architecture To Be Used More Often?

Well, we must tell our governments that other countries are seeing great benefits from green architecture. These benefits include:

  1. Reduced pollution levels including dust particles, fumes, and carbon dioxide.  
  2. Economic gain due to vastly reduced air conditioning requirements. 
  3. Energy usage reduction results in less demand for the national grid and less carbon to be burned for energy production. 
  4. Happier healthier people result in more productive workers and benefit the economy.
  5. Reconnection with nature within our built-up cities, which improves the psychological well-being of every individual. 
  6. More oxygen for us all to breathe!

Scientific Approach To Green Architecture

One of my favorite examples from the film is over In Hamburg Germany, where they are taking a more scientific approach to green architecture. They are using algae and the process of photosynthesis to turn the sun’s energy into fuel.

The algae rapidly grow within the glass panels. It is then extracted and put into a bio-convertor which turns the algae into biomass.  

Benefits Of Biomass

This biomass can then be used for a number of things. It can be a source of food for humans or animals. It can also power cars, but the main purpose is to create electricity and heat for the people living in the building.

When we were there we were told that the process was actually producing so much energy that it can offer electricity to the surrounding buildings too.

Converting Waste Into Clean Energy

I also found the building that I visited in Copenhagen Denmark to be very interesting. Here they are engaging the public directly with the energy sector. This has been achieved by placing a ski slope on top of the cleanest waste-to-energy power plant in the world. We took the glass lift to the top which showed us inside the factory where 440,000 tons of waste is being converted into clean energy annually.

Sustainability Makes Our Lives More Enjoyable

Once at the top you see the toxin-free steam being released which is said to be as fresh as mountain air. You then see the very start of one of the world’s largest artificial ski slopes.  

This building has shown that creating a sustainable future doesn’t have to be limiting it can actually make our lives more enjoyable.

The architect Bjarke Ingels hopes that this project will inspire those across the world to create architecture that can be fun and also save our environment.
